Contracts at Doñana Biological Station within ECOPOTENTIAL project

The Doñana Biological Station (CSIC) is participating in H2020 RIA project ECOPOTENTIAL. Within this framework we are looking for two candidates for two-year contracts starting in 2016.



ECOPOTENTIAL: IMPROVING FUTURE ECOSYSTEM BENEFITS THROUGH EARTH OBSERVATIONS

Project Summary:

Terrestrial and marine ecosystems provide essential services to human societies. Anthropogenic pressure, however, causes serious threat to ecosystems, leading to habitat degradation, “novel ecosystems” and increased risk of collapse, with related loss of ecosystem services. Knowledge-based conservation, management and restoration policies are needed, in order to improve ecosystem benefits in face of increasing pressures. ECOPOTENTIAL will make significant progress beyond the current state-of-the-art and create a new unified framework for ecosystem studies and management of protected areas (PA). ECOPOTENTIAL will focus on internationally recognized PAs in Europe and beyond; most PAs are UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves, national parks and Natura 2000 sites. LTER sites and Large Marine Ecosystems are included. Best use of Earth Observation (EO) and monitoring data will be made possible by new EO ecosystem data services (ECOpernicus). New modelling approaches able to include information from EO data will be developed, ecosystem services in current and future conditions will be assessed, and the requirements of future protected areas will be defined. Open and interoperable access to data and knowledge will be assured by a GEO Ecosystem Virtual Laboratory Platform, fully integrated in GEOSS. Support to transparent and knowledge-based conservation and management policies, able to include information from EO data, will be given. Knowledge gained in the PAs will be upscaled to pan-European conditions and used for planning and management of future PAs. A permanent stakeholder consultancy group (GEO Ecosystem Community of Practice) will be created. Capacity building will be pursued at all levels. SMEs will be involved to create expertise leading to new job opportunities, ensuring commercial uptake and long-term continuation of services. In summary, ECOPOTENTIAL will use the most advanced technologies to improve future ecosystem benefits for humankind.

Candidate 1: Will work in Workpackages (WP) 4 "Earth Observation Data Quality & Services" and 6 "Ecosystem Modelling and Scenarios" coordinating Doñana Biological Station contribution to these workpackages.


The main aim of this position: To analyse temporal dynamics of wetlands in Doñana National Park using historical remote sensing data sets (Landsat, MODIS, Sentinel) and potentially in other PAs with similar wetlands (Camarge, Danube Delta) and build predictive models of ecosystem functions and services.

Expertise: The desired candidate should have experience in some or all of the following areas: Analysis of remote sensing data, especially satellite time-series. Remote sensing software. Time series statistical analysis. Statistical models in ecology. Species distribution models (Generalized Linear Models, Generalized Additive Models, Regression Trees, Neural Networks, Maximum Entropy Models). Computer programming.


Candidate 2: Will work in Workpackages (WP) 5 "In-situ monitoring data" and WP 11 "Policy development", coordinating Doñana Biological Station contribution to these workpackages.


The main aim of this position: To provide access to existing in-situ monitoring data for Doñana National Park to other members of the consortium. Coordinate ground-truthing of remote sensing derived land-use/land-cover maps, ecosystem function and ecosystem services model maps for Doñana wetlands. Organize the workshops defined within WP 11 with stakeholders for Doñana PA. The aim will be to define managers requirements and policy makers information needs for the conservation of Doñana National Park, enhance the use of EO and in-situ data in decision making, and show the potential of the specific modelling tools developed within ECOPOTENTIAL to park managers.

Expertise: The desired candidate should have experience in some or all of the following areas: Field sampling in ecology. Metadata of ecological datasets. Database management. Wetland ecology. Ecological modelling. Ecosystem services. Adaptive management and governance. Socio-ecosystems.


Both junior and senior post-doctoral candidates with a solid publication record related to the positions offered are encouraged to apply.


Starting date: January 2016 approx.
Salary: 35,000 € approx. per yr. before taxes

Post-doctoral Felloships Axa Research Fund


We are looking for a candidate to apply for a 2 yr post-doctoral fellowship from AXA Research Fund Fellowship. Felloships are within the agreement between AXA Research Fund and CSIC, deadline 2nd December, to work in the following research project.

WetClim - Remote sensing indicators of ecosystem services and ecosystem health in seasonal wetlands under climate change

Seasonal wetlands are highly dynamic ecosystems for which satellite images time series are the only way to study their spatial dynamics and temporal trends. They are fragile ecosystems that will be dramatically affected by climate change and for which there is very little scientific knowledge on how they change and how they will respond. Wetlands provide ecosystem services such as flood control, water purification, recreation and tourism, provide cultural an aesthetic values, and are reservoirs of biodiversity. In order to design adaptation strategies it is necessary to design efficient ways to monitor the health of these ecosystems under climate change, and build models on how they could respond to future climate change predictions. The present proposal coordinates the work of three research teams from Spain, Argentina and Brazil, with experience in remote sensing of wetlands. The objective is to reconstruct the flooding dynamics from 2000 to 2014 of three wetlands of international importance and Ramsar sites (Doñana, Parana's river Delta and the Pantanal) using the Short-wave infra-red (SWIR) bands of MODIS. Mean hydroperiod duration and variability will be related to vegetation communities, functional and structural characteristics present at  point locations in wetlands and recorded at ground-truth visits. The three research groups will coordinate their approaches to the problem and participate at simultaneous field campaigns at the three sites. The project will facilitate the generalization of  local models of wetland functional characteristics studied with remote sensing, and facilitate coordination between the research groups that are also applying for a larger COST Action.

Postdoc opportunity in Remote Sensing of Wetlands




The Doñana Biological Station was given the "Severo Ochoa" award by the Spanish Ministry of Economy Competitiveness in 2012. Under this umbrella there will be  7 Postdoctoral Fellowship opportunities in 2013.  The Remote Sensing and GIS Lab (LAST-EBD) can support the application of candidates interested in performing research in Remote Sensing of Wetlands.  You can have a look in this blog to see our research interests. Funded by the “Severo Ochoa” Doñana Biological Station is seeking applicants for seven two-year postdoctoral fellowships. The Doñana Biological Station, belonging to the Spanish Council for Research (CSIC), is currently made up of 43 faculty members working in the following research lines:

Se busca candidato interesado en iniciar una tesis doctoral centrada en la ecología del movimiento y el uso del espacio en el Quebrantahuesos

dentro del: “Proyecto de reintroducción del Quebrantahuesos en Picos de Europa”



El objetivo principal de la tesis es estudiar de manera fina los movimientos de los ejemplares de quebrantahuesos liberados en el proyecto de reintroducción empleando para ello sistemas de seguimiento que incorporen GPS (ARGOS/GPS ó GPS/GSM), y compararlos con los movimientos de jóvenes quebrantahuesos criados por sus padres naturales en el Pirineo.

Perfil preferido de los candidatos:

 -Licenciados en Ciencias Biológica o Ciencias Ambientales

Realización de tesis doctorales en el LAST-EBD

De vez en cuando tenemos consultas de personas interesadas en realizar una tesis doctoral con nosotros en el LAST-EBD. Siempre estamos abiertos a propuestas de licenciados que hayan acabado recientemente y que estén interesados en hacer una tesis utilizando herramientas de Sistemas de Información Geográfica o Teledetección en ecología; pero normalmente el LAST no cuenta con financiación propia para contratar personal o conceder becas.  Para estudiantes estranjeros una opción son las becas MAE-AECI (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional), ahora mismo hay una convocatoria abierta que incluye becas para estudios de doctorado en España que acaba el día 26 de Enero. Este es el enlace de la convocatoria y este el enlace a la solicitud online. Para estudiantes españoles con un buen expediente académico se acaba de abrir la convocatoria de becas FPU (Formación de Profesorado Universitario). El plazo acaba el 14 de Febrero. El CSIC tiene también la convocatoria de becas JAE (Junta de Ampliación de Estudios), aún no está abierto el plazo del 2011; pero debería abrirse en breve. También existen becas de introducción a la investigación a la investigación, para estudiantes de los últimos cursos de carrera, que son una buena forma de conocernos antes de embarcarse en una tesis:

ESA fostering the next generation of Earth scientists

La Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) abre una convocatoria de becas post-doctorales para jóvenes científicos interesados en la investigación del funcionamiento del planeta Tierra mediante teledetección. La fecha límite para las solicitudes es el 16 de enero de 2009. El LAST-EBD podría estar interesado en dar apoyo a solicitantes de este programa de becas post-doctorales.
